４９〕日本軍はハル・ノートによってまんまと誘き出され、４１年１２月８日に真珠湾攻撃に成功し、同時にマレー半島でもイギリス軍を55日間で撃退し順調な滑り出しを見せてしまった。

このハワイ開戦とマレー作戦によって、第二次世界大戦はヨーロッパ・北アフリカ・アジアと太平洋諸島を含む地球的規模の戦争へと拡大したと言っても過言ではない。

５０〕然し、出だしが好調すぎた戦況も４２年６月４日から６日にかけてのミッドウェー海戦で、主力正規空母の赤城・加賀・蒼龍・飛龍の四隻を一挙に失ってしまった。

翌年の４月１８日には連合艦隊司令長官・山本五十六大将が米国のＰ３８戦闘機の攻撃を受けて戦死した。

この辺りから日本軍に暗雲が立ち込めたのです。先ずは食料不足が兵隊を悩ませた。

５１〕その内に各戦地ではあらゆる物資が不足し、銃弾も侭ならない中で４４年７月にはサイパン島が落とされ続いてグアム島も陥落した。

４５年３月２６日に硫黄島で栗林中将隊が２００名の兵士と共に玉砕すると、首都東京は丸裸同然となった。

連合軍はそうした事を見越したかの様に、沖縄本島への攻撃を開始したのです。

５２〕沖縄の攻防は非戦闘員を巻き込み壮絶な戦いだった。

45年3月26日から沖縄各地が戦場となり、数十万人の犠牲を出しながら戦いは6月20日まで続き、組織的な戦いが終了したと云うより、日本軍の名だたる指揮官たちが自決して果てた。

命令系統が壊滅した事により終了したと考えた方が正しいのかも知れない。
